James is a man of his word, and he has proven it every day for the past six years. At 97 years old, he has seen a lot in his life. He has travelled the world and worked as a train driver and coal miner. Yet, none of those experiences mean as much to him as the time he spends with his wife, Annie, at Juniper Annesley Residential Aged Care Home in Bentley.
James and Annie have been happily married for 30 years. Their love story began in Bali and continued in Perth, where they built a life together. 86-year-old Annie is now living with dementia, but although dementia has impacted their lives in various ways, it hasn’t changed their love for one another.
“She is my wife. For better or for worse, I will never leave her side. I love her so much,” said James.
James spends his days by Annie’s side; chatting, knitting, and sharing his knitted creations with other residents, brightening the day for everyone he meets. This includes the staff, who he often surprises with a little chocolate bar.
“Age is just the passing of time; it’s what you do with that time that makes the difference,” James said.
James’s positive outlook on life is a testament to his belief in the power of love and commitment. Despite Annie living with dementia, James knows she is still the woman he fell in love with.
As Dementia Action Week approaches, James shared his thoughts on how dementia has impacted their lives.
“Dementia has changed a lot for us. We are no longer able to live together but I don’t love Annie any less and I still get to spend my days with her.”
James’s story is a beautiful reminder that dementia does not have to diminish the connection shared with a loved one. His daily visits show that that love can endure even the most challenging circumstances.
“Worry doesn’t do anything to you; it just makes things worse. What you put into life; you get out. And I’ve put love into ours.”
As Juniper comes together to raise awareness during Dementia Action Week, James and Annie’s story serves as an inspiration to us all. It highlights the importance of love, compassion, and the impact that unwavering support can have on those living with dementia.
