In Australia, statistics show that one in six women and one in 16 men have experienced physical or sexual violence at the hands of a current or former partner*.
It’s an alarming statistic that continues to grow, with 50 women reported to have died from domestic violence attacks in 2022 alone.
Juniper wholeheartedly supports new legislation which came into effect this month and sets a national standard for Australian businesses to implement a paid Family and Domestic Violence leave policy for their staff.
All full-time, part-time, and casual non-small business employees who experience family and domestic violence are entitled to 10 days paid leave in place of the previous entitlement of five days unpaid leave.
As an impassioned not-for-profit organisation, Juniper has long been committed to the safety and wellbeing of our staff and has had a paid Family and Domestic Violence leave policy in place for the past five years.
In line with the legislative changes, Juniper staff will now be able access up to 10 days paid Family and Domestic Violence leave a year without deducting from their personal leave.
At Juniper, we believe this is a positive step towards acknowledging the financial and emotional challenges faced by survivors of family and domestic violence, while also bringing attention to a harrowing social issue that needs to be addressed.
