Handwritten letters penned by AFLW players for residents at Juniper John Bryant Aged Care in Marangaroo have signed, sealed and delivered a heartwarming connection between the two.
Organised by Juniper John Bryant Occupational Therapist and Dockers player Laura Pugh, the recent letter exchange was a delightful way to recognise the annual Letter to an Elder Day.
Delivered to residents at a special morning tea get together, the letters provided a traditional and personal opportunity for Dockers players to introduce themselves to residents.
“The residents really enjoyed receiving the letters and in particular finding out about the players and what they do outside of playing football,” Laura said.
Residents and Juniper staff members have since written letters replying to the players, which has given players a real sense of connection with the residents.
Each year, Letter to an Elder Day held on 26 February encourages people across the globe to put pen to paper and write to an elder to brighten their day.
The campaign dates back several years as a way of strengthening bonds between generations as well as boosting gratitude, respect and recognition of older people.
