Volunteer Val is a valuable and versatile gem

Celebrating her 75th birthday in 2024, just like Juniper, long-standing St David’s Residential Aged Care Home volunteer Val Kissack loves nothing more than helping others.

“I started volunteering when my little girl was nine years old, now she’s 49,” Val said.

“It was how I was brought up, you helped people.”

A retired nurse, Val first dedicated herself to volunteering as a “canteen mistress” at her daughter’s primary school, then later set up a lunch program for people sleeping rough as well as taking people to and from local churches for several years – something she continues to do each week.

Val first lent a hand at St David’s in 2009 when her mother was a resident, and became an official Juniper volunteer the following year.

Since then, Val has set aside her Mondays and Wednesdays, and sometimes Fridays, to a carry out variety of duties at St David’s in Mount Lawley.

From helping with church services, setting dining tables, cleaning, tending a vegetable garden to mending clothing, delivering morning teas and supporting the therapy department, Val is a non-stop support machine.

“I’m not a person to sit down for an hour and just sit there,” Val said.

“I love being with people, I do it because I love it.”

Described as caring, amazing, and helpful, or a combination of all three, Val is a compassionate wonder who is adored by residents and staff.

“They give me respect more than anything else – we’re like family here,” Val said.

“I’ve been here so long, a lot of people call me different names – mother, nonna, nana and Val.”

St David’s Therapy Assistant Manjula Patel described Val as a valiant, versatile and valuable gem who was forever dedicated to helping others.

“Val has the kindest nature and helps with every department within our home – she loves, laughs and makes residents laugh along,” Manjula said.

While the way Val is greeted might vary depending on the day, one thing that remains a constant is her selfless dedication to others.
